How To Screen Record On iPhone and iPad: 2021 Guide

Do you want to capture what’s playing on-screen or perhaps film your gameplay? Are you fond of making video tutorials about how various apps work? Or perhaps, you need to teach someone how to do something on their phone but can’t do it in person? Then, knowing how to record screen iPhones and iPads might just be what you need.

Setting Up Screen Recording On iPhone and iPad

Do you remember when screen capturing became a thing? It opened up several possibilities including getting screenshots of various files. Then, screen recording became a thing and the list of possibilities just got bigger.  

There are several ways to screen record on an iPhone and iPad. We’ll walk you through the iPhone screen record process using the built-in iOS record screen tool. Before you start to record iPhone screen, you must add Screen Recording to your Control Center by following these steps:

    • Go to Settings and tap on Control Center.
    • Select Customize Controls.
    • Tap the plus icon next to Screen Recording.

 

How To Start Recording The Screen On An iPhone or iPad

Once you’ve completed the above, start your iPhone screen recording session. To finally start screen recording, turn on screen recording iPhone by following these steps:

    • Open Control Center. (On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right of the screen. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.)
    • Tap the Screen Recording button or Record icon. (After the countdown, everything on the iPhone screen will be recorded).

 

Ending A Screen Recording On iOS Devices

Once you’ve captured what’s needed, end the Phone screen recorder through any of the following processes.

First:

    • Open the Control Center by swiping from the upper right corner or from the bottom of the screen depending on your iOS version.
    • Tap the iPhone record screen icon or button so it turns back to gray.

You can also:

    • Go to the Home screen.
    • Tap the red bar at the top-left corner of the screen.
    • Confirm ending the screen record on the iPhone.

The same process is true in ending record screen on iPad. The screen recording file will be saved to your Photos app. If you want to check it out, simply open the Photos app and scroll down to the Albums tab. Under Media Types, tap Screen recordings to see your recent screen record capture along with the rest of your screen recording files.

 

How To Record Your Screen With Sound

When you screen record iPhone or iPad, especially for tutorial or presentation purposes, it’s best to capture the sound as well. Good thing recording an iPhone screen provides the option of doing it with or without sound.

Here’s how to turn on the microphone to screen record on your iPhone and iPad with audio. Before proceeding to the following steps, make sure to have added the Screen Recording button to your Control Center by following the steps above.

    • Open the Control Center ( either swipe down or swipe from the button depending on the iOS version).
    • Long-press the Record icon.
    • Tap Microphone. Make sure Photos is selected before tapping Start Recording.

Take note that everything on the screen along with internal audio and external audio will be recorded. For instance, if you’re doing a tutorial video, in addition to everything happening on the screen (video and audio), your commentaries (and other external noise) will also be recorded. 

Also, take note that even notifications that pop up will be recorded so you might want to enable DND (Do Not Disturb) beforehand. There are however some apps, like Apple Music, that do not support internal audio recording.

As previously mentioned, there are several ways to screen record on iPhone. There are three main ways to do so.

  • Built-in iOS Screen Recording Tool

This is the quickest and easiest way to record your screen iPhone or on iPad. Simply add Screen Recording to iPhone Control Center. After that, open the Control Center and tap the Screen Recording icon. Now you may start your screen recorder on iPhone. 

  • Screen Record iPad and iPhone with Third-Party Apps

This option is perfect if you plan on editing and uploading the captured video on a Mac.

    • Connect the iOS device with a Lightning cable and open QuickTime Player.
    • Click File > New Movie Recording
    • In the QuickTime window, click the arrow next to the Record button.
    • Select your iOS device for the Camera (or for the Microphone too)
    • Click the Record button.
    • Go to your iPhone or iPad to perform the actions you want to capture.
    • Hit the Stop button in QuickTime when complete.

 

  • Screen Record iPad and iPhone with Third-Party Apps

You can download a screen recording tool from the App Store. Most apps also support audio recording.

  • Trimming Your Screen Recording

Is the video captured using your screen recorder iPhone feature too long? Or do you want to break it down to shorter clips? You can edit the video’s length by doing the following.

    • Open Photos App and select the video to edit.
    • Tap Edit.
    • Move the sliders to change start and stop time.
    • Tap the Play button to preview.
    • Tap Done then Save Video or Save as New Clip.
  • Crop A Video Screen Capture On iPhone

You can’t ‘pre-crop’ when you screen record on your iPhone but you can do so after on the Photos app (iOS 13 or later).

    • Open Photos app and select video.
    • Tap Edit.
    • Tap the Crop-Rotate icon and make adjustments.
    • Tap Done (Tap Edit then Revert to restore the original video).

 

  • Adding Arrows and Captions To An iPhone Screen Recording

You can add arrows, captions, or stickers to your video. To do this, you’ll be needing a third-party screen recording app.
