What’s Up with the New Version iOS 15.6.1?

The iOS 15.6.1 mainly addresses a couple of security updates and some bug fixes. In terms of anything new that came with the update, while Apple did not make any specific announcements, you might notice changes in Garageband (17 new remix sessions, Katy Perry remix sessions, Modular Rhythms, New loops, and more).

Performance Issues Addressed

iOS 15.6.1 is also meant to address some performance issues including:

  • Abnormal battery drain
  • Busted Wi-Fi connectivity
  • UI lags
  • Bluetooth issues
  • Random reboots, lockups, and freezes
  • Issues with first-party applications

Bug Fixes Delivered

Downloading the latest update is a must especially if you missed the previous iOS 15 version. Here are some of the bug fixes that came with iOS 15.6.1:

  • Storage Issues. Settings displays that device storage is full even if it’s available.
  • Braille Device Issues. Braille devices slow down or stop responding when navigating text in Mail.
  • Safari Issues. Tab reverts to the previous page.

Security Issues Patched

Apple announced two main security updates with the release of iOS 15.6.1. Security company Sopho, in a recent blog by their principal research scientist Paul Ducklin, has shed some light on these security issues.

  • iPhone Kernel Vulnerability (CVE-2022-32894)
The security issue could allow certain applications to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. This could be done by attackers by exploiting the WebKit bug and could allow them to spy on apps, access your data, change your security settings, read your messages, and more. To prevent further explorations, an out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.

  • WebKit Flaw (CVE-2022-32893)
This security flaw could allow compromised web pages to trick iOS devices into running unauthorized and untrusted software codes. This implies that a cybercriminal with the know-how could implant malware on your device from visiting a supposedly innocent web page. To prevent any such attacks, Apple released a security patch through the iOS 15.6.1 update.

Should You Update to the New iOS Version?

System updates are generally a good thing. Here are some key notes that might help you decide whether you should update to the new iOS version or not.

  • The iOS 15.6.1 could help deal with bugs as well as performance issues that you may be experiencing with the iOS 15.6 or older.
  • There have been certain problems including abnormal battery drain, first-party and third-party app issues, and Touch ID and Face ID issues, that have been reported. To be fair, some of these issues may have been carried over from older versions of iOS 15.
  • You can’t move your software back to iOS 15 if iOS 15.6.1 starts causing problems.
  • You can’t downgrade to anything lover than iOS 15.6. This could mean saying goodbye permanently to iOS 15 features or older version features that you find to be working just fine at the moment.
  • You should avoid iOS 15.6.1 if you still jailbreak your iPhone.

Conclusion

The iOS 15.6.1, just like any other system update, generally provides fixes and updates that make for a smoother and safer use of your iOS device.  On another note, Apple’s new iOS 16 operating system is already in beta testing and is supposed to be released sometime in September. This will probably be a few days after the September 7th launch event for iPhone 14.
