We now live in a world where we must protect our children no matter where they are. Don’t you think it’s kind of ridiculous that we have to take extra measures to protect our children even while they’re at school? But yesterday in Spain at approximately 9:30 am, a 13-year-old boy attempted to re-enact the April 20th,1999 Columbine Massacre at a local high school in Barcelona. The young boy killed a substitute teacher and wounded 5 students with a crossbow and a machete. Since the boy is a minor he is not being charged and will only be sent to a mental institution. Government officials have stated such events are very rare in Spain, which just goes to show that you never know what can happen and where, or when and how they happen. But being prepared can save many lives, including your child’s and your own.
How? You have to first start dissecting the reasons why this terrible outbreak happened. Could this situation have been prevented, and was this child a victim of bullying? If that’s the case, how do you know if your child is or isn’t suffering at the hands of a bully? Most children would hide that they are being victimized from their parents or guardians. Cyber bullying or any type of bullying makes the victim afraid, and he or she doesn’t believe that a parent or adult can help them in any way. Are you sure your child is being honest with you? Some kids try to mask it by staying home from school and faking an illness, and others may take out their anger on other children and possibly become the bully themselves. That’s why it’s important to speak to your children and let them know they are not alone. Studies show that approximately “160,000 students stay home from school every day because of bullying.”
As parents we need to show our children we are there for them 100%. We need to monitor our children and pay attention to anything out of the normal, and watch out for signs that don’t seem to right.
