Tips & Tricks: My Phone Got Wet. What Do I Do Now?

Everyone runs into this problem sometime in their life. It happens to the best of us, whether you dropped your cell phone in the toilet, it got soaked during a rainstorm, or used it in the pool. The main panic that immediately sets in is that a person doesn’t want to lose their phone data. Well, that’s why there are many tools and programs specifically for cell phone backup and data recovery. Aside from these tools, there are a few things you can do if your phone gets wet such as the following.

Turn Your Phone Off!

Turning your phone off is the first thing you should do if your cell phone gets wet! This is just common sense! This will help slightly in preventing any further phone damage.

Remove Your Battery IMMEDIATELY!!!

It’s simple to remove your cell phone battery.

Water and batteries don’t mix! Stop your phone from short circuiting or your battery becoming damaged by removing the battery immediately! It’s recommended with most water removal methods to remove the battery.

Blot It With Paper Towels

Once you turn your phone off and remove the battery, blot your phone with paper towels. This will help remove the excess of water from your phone to start with.

Use A Wet Electronics Pouch

A product that many use to remove water from a cell phone is the Kensington EVAP Wet Phone Rescue Pouch. These type of products are simple to use and effective. To use it, all you have to do is blot your phone of excess water, put your phone in-between the two EVAP packets, and place in the EVAP bag. After about 6-24 hours, your phone should be good by viewing the humidity indicator on the bag.

Put Your Phone in a Bag of Rice

If you don’t have a wet electronics pouch, make sure to get one for next time! For the time being, you can put your phone in a bag of uncooked rice for 24 hours. Using rice to save your wet phone has been hotly debated, however, based on personal experience, I have found it useful in curing my own wet cell phone.

To protect your phone for the next time you get it wet, make sure you have a wet electronics pouch and use a data recovery and backup service like DDI Utilities. This will ease your panic by knowing your precious data is safe!
